any addiction. We separated, and I moved away from the town, leaving behind the constant threat of repercussion. There would always be someone new to step up, to relight the fire. I had learned that trying to beat an entire town was pointless. This point was proven to me in glorious technicolour one night when, upon leaving a nightclub, I saw a baying mob.

On closer inspection, I saw that what the crowd were watching so intently was a man punching a woman in the face, whilst squeezing her throat. I pushed through the crowd and grabbed the coward by his neck. As he turned around, I punched him, sending his snivelling carcass to the ground. I reached out to the girl to tell her not to worry and was surprised by her spitting in my face and then shouting, “Get off my husband, you bastard!”

I was even more taken aback when the audience of this vile spectacle started swearing at me and pushing me away for intervening.

“Don’t get involved, it’s between husband and wife.”

I couldn’t believe it. This was a crowd made up of young and old, men and women, each glaring at me with hatred as if I were the monster.

“Get on with it!” I shouted, pushing my way out of this madness.

If this was the norm in this town, I needed to get out. I felt like Wyatt Earp but, unlike him, I hadn’t tamed the Wild West, merely sent a couple of the locals to my own version of Boot Hill (via my boot in their faces).

Despite all this violence and madness, my Jiu-Jitsu training was going well. I was now totally absorbed with BJJ (well, the stuff I had learned from the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu tapes) and had pretty much stopped practicing the Trad Jujitsu that I now held a Black Belt in.
